The most beautiful churches in Barcelona

Temple Expiatorio del Sagrado Corazón (Tibidabo)

Barcelona is a city very rich historically speaking, since part of the impressive Roman remains that are found in Via Laietana, for example, is home to churches with great architectural beauty. The best option to see these works is renting an apartment in Barcelona by the Born or the Gothic quarter. Let's see what these fantastic constructions...

In the first place, and although it may be a little tired of hearing about it, should appoint the Gaudi's Sagrada Familia. It is a church started by the famous modernist architect on March 19, 1882, although still not finished... Said that its construction could be finished during the first third of this century. The Christian symbolism is present in all his work, which was declared a minor basilica on November 7, 2010 by Pope Benedicto XVI. Pick up an accommodation in Barcelona close to this church is not bad idea, since it is about 20 minutes walk from the city centre.

In second place we find the Church of Santa Maria del Mar, the extraordinary Gothic construction which will leave you open-mouthed. It was built between 1329 and 1383 by Berenguer de Montagut and Ramón Despuig, and is a work that you can not miss... He is currently one of the most visited destinations of the city , thanks above all to the novel by Ildefonso Falcones, the Cathedral of the sea, which has sold more than one million copies and has been translated into numerous languages. You can find it in the District of el Born.

You can not miss the distinguished Cathedral of Barcelona, in the Gothic style. It is the seat of the Archbishopric of Barcelona, in Catalonia, although the present Cathedral was built during the 13th to 15th centuries on the ancient Romanesque cathedral. It is dedicated to the Holy Cross from the year 599 and was added from the year 877 to Santa Eulalia, patron saint of the city of Barcelona. If you go to Barcelona for Christmas, make a beautiful Christmas market in front of this church.

Finally, I would like to highlight the Expiatory Temple of the Sacred Heart, in the Tibidabo (in the first picture). This construction is an important symbol of the city and one of the first points shown arriving at Barcelona, either by car or plane. It was built by the architect Enric Sagnier i Villavecchia and completed by his son Josep Maria Sagnier i Vidal between 1902 to 1961. Just in front of this temple is the Tibidabo, one of Europe's oldest amusement park.
